Welcome to this edition of the Purposeful Partnerships Report, your go-to source for the latest insights on purpose-driven collaborations in the sports industry. In this issue, we’ll explore Reddit’s new partnership with major U.S. sports leagues, efforts to safeguard the future of winter sports, and SailGP’s exciting collaboration with the Sport Impact Summit. Let’s dive in!
Major Sports Leagues Partner With Reddit
Reddit announced partnerships with major sports organizations, including the NFL, NBA, MLB, PGA Tour, and NASCAR. This collaboration will bring exclusive content to Reddit’s platform, aimed at increasing fan engagement and driving advertising revenue.
With a highly active user base and thriving communities dedicated to sports, Reddit sees an opportunity to leverage the crossover between its audience and sports enthusiasts. The partnership promises to deliver more comprehensive coverage, including video highlights, behind-the-scenes access, and additional fresh content from these leagues’ seasons and key events. This will not only enhance the fan experience but also provide advertisers with a prime opportunity to tap into Reddit’s vast audience.
Reddit has long been a hub for sports conversations, with the sports category receiving 20.4 billion page views over the past year—a 26% increase from the previous 12 months. The company aims to capitalize on this growing interest by offering more premium content and boosting engagement through its new partnerships.
By positioning itself as a go-to destination for sports fans, Reddit is setting the stage for further expansion in the sports content space, while advertisers gain access to a more targeted, engaged demographic.
While this partnership between Reddit and the sports leagues isn’t explicitly purpose-driven, it does underscore the power of creative fan engagement in modern sports marketing. It highlights how brands and teams can forge unique interactions with fans by tapping into platforms like Reddit, where passionate sports communities already exist. By delivering exclusive content, behind-the-scenes access, and real-time highlights, this collaboration showcases how brands can move beyond traditional sponsorship methods to engage fans in more interactive, immersive ways.

WMO and FIS Partner to Address Climate Change’s Threat to Winter Sports
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) announced a groundbreaking partnership aimed at raising awareness of the damaging effects of climate change on winter sports and tourism. The collaboration seeks to highlight how rising global temperatures are threatening snow and ice, essential to the winter sports industry, and to foster dialogue between scientific and sports communities to develop sustainable solutions.
Set to begin before the 2024/2025 winter season, this five-year partnership will emphasize both the immediate and long-term challenges facing mountain ecosystems, local communities, and economies dependent on winter sports. The initiative aims to inform and educate, calling attention to the severe consequences that climate change is already having on snow-dependent regions.
Winter Sports in Peril
Scientific studies have provided stark insights into the effects of climate change on winter sports. One study from Switzerland revealed that Alpine glaciers have lost 60% of their volume since 1850. Another study predicted that by 2060, the freezing point will rise to around 1,300 to 1,500 meters above sea level, compared to around 600 meters fifty years ago, drastically reducing the number of viable ski resorts.
The WMO and FIS partnership aims to combat these threats by implementing strategic measures, starting with a webinar for national ski associations on November 7. This event will focus on the impact of global warming on the entire winter sports industry, serving as the first step in a broader effort to align sports organizations with scientific insights to protect the future of winter sports.
This partnership highlights how sports organizations can collaborate with global entities to tackle critical issues like climate change. By working together, the WMO and FIS are not only aiming to save winter sports but also to lead a broader conversation on sustainability and the future of our planet.

SailGP Teams Up with Sport Impact Summit to Drive Sustainability in Sports
SailGP, the global racing championship known for its high-speed F50 catamaran races across iconic venues, has announced a partnership with the Sport Impact Summit as its newest Impact Partner. This collaboration aligns with both organizations' missions to leverage sports for positive global change, particularly around sustainability.
SailGP’s commitment to being the world’s most sustainable sports and entertainment platform is perfectly in line with the goals of Sport Impact Summit, a pioneering event series aimed at uniting elite athletes, sports teams, business leaders, and scientists to address global sustainability challenges. The summit, taking place on December 4th and 5th, 2024, promises to be a landmark event, featuring discussions on how sports can drive positive environmental and social change.
SailGP's involvement extends beyond the summit itself. Last month, Hannah Mills, a SailGP star and strategist for the Emirates Great Britain team, was announced as the Sport Impact Summit’s first Impact Champion. As an advocate for sustainability in sports, Mills represents the growing movement of athletes dedicated to promoting positive environmental change through their platforms.
As the event draws closer, the summit will continue to recruit more Impact Champions and Partners, all committed to the shared vision of using sports as a powerful tool for global impact. Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in keynotes, panel discussions, and interactive workshops aimed at creating actionable change in the sports industry.
SailGP has been featured numerous times in previous editions of this newsletter, consistently showcasing its commitment to becoming a leading voice in sustainable sports. This latest partnership is yet another example of how SailGP continues to set the standard for environmental responsibility, serving as a powerful example for other leagues around the world to follow.
